Viva Las Vegas

Gambling in casinos, partying until the morning, getting dressed up and having one too many. All things that happen when you go to Las Vegas... and then there is me. Traveling to Las Vegas for the first time was an adventure I will never forgot, however I wouldn't say that I checked off most of the things that most people do when they go. If you're looking for a few days filled with fun and adventure while seeing a legendary city at the same time well this post is for you. Four days of sightseeing, spending a few hours road tripping to the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead, walking the strip and placing one blackjack bet (which was more than enough for my cheap bum) made for an amazing time. We went from a Sunday night to a Thursday and it was never a dull moment. When arriving if you are planning on taking a trip out of the city I would highly recommend renting a car. It was super convenient and made managing our time a lot easier. We picked up our car right at the airport and drove to our hotel. We stayed at The Mirage and it had everything I would expect from a Vegas hotel. Extravagant to say the least. Lots of families, a zoo that housed tigers and dolphins, a 24 hour restaurant, massive casino and if you're looking to catch a show, Cirque du Soliel's Love is right on the grounds.
We spent our first day walking up and down the strip and if you think you can do this in a couple hours think again... its a long walk but definitely worth it, I mean its Vegas you have too! Grab a drink for a street side bar and get to stepping! (you can drink on the streets there whaaaat?!) Explore all the amazing hotels, each with their own special little twist. My personal favourites were the Bellagio, Venetian, Ceasers Palace and the Cosmopolitan. When you get hungry grab a bite at Gordon Ramsey's Fish and Chips right beside the Linq! Delicious if you're into that sort of thing!

We headed to be early to get ready for day two after our full day of walking knowing that we would need a whole lot of energy to trek the Grand Canyon! I would recommend leaving early - around 6:30/7am to beat all the tour buses.. we didn't have a single problem on the road but I could imagine what a headache it would be driving 20 miles an hour behind a coach bus from Nevada to Arizona. Its about a 3 hour drive with beautiful scenic views. Just throw on that good ol' country music and put the pedal to the medal and go! Once you arrive to the west side of the Canyon you will buy your tickets and start your excursion. I highly recommend including the Skydeck in your ticket purchase its truly amazing! Walking on a glass floor hundreds of feet above the Canyon looking down was way too cool and even if you have a fear of heights I'm sure you'll be happy you did it! The tour includes 3 destinations - Eagle Point (where the Skywalk is), Guano Point, and the Hualapai Ranch. There is a shuttle bus that takes you from one destination to another which is included in your ticket purchase and if you want to skip a point you can.

When you arrive at Guano Point, you are able to stop and have lunch and fuel up! (this can be included in your ticket price or purchased separately) There are lots of picnic benches overlooking the canyon that gives you an amazing view. Our lunch consisted of pulled beef, a bun, mashed potatoes, a drink and oatmeal raisin cookie 😀 The beef was actually sooooo good I could have eaten a whole plate of just that! We walked around and climbed a big rock formation that gave us the most amazing view, and took a whole bunch of pictures. Heading to the Skywalk right after at Eagle Point was nothing short of incredible! I am afraid of heights but being in a closed space and having the glass I found myself to handle it well. Two-stepping across the floor, laying down as if I was free falling and sliding across the floor made for a fun time full of smiles! They do make you put these fiber cloth like slip-ons over your shoes so you don't mark the glass but it makes a fun slip and slide! They also have professional photographers there to take pictures of you if you wish that you can then purchase individually or all on a USB for around $64 USD.  The third stop was the Hualapai Ranch where the tribe that lives in this area stays. You really feel like you're on the set of an old Western movie. There are little magic shows, a ranch full of horses, wagon rides, a root beer bar and a gift shop. We ended up taking out 2 horses for a ride down right along the edge of the Canyon. For a 30 minute ride it cost us $10 a person and being a horse enthusiast I must say I loved it! Again, nothing but beautiful views, rock formations and adrenaline. Once we were done we just hoped right back on the shuttle to our car and headed back to the city of sin but not without stopping at Hoover Dam for a photo up and history lesson!

We we arrived back to our hotel we got ready for our G rated night on the town. We had tickets to see Cirque du Soliel's "O" at the Bellagio which takes place in, around and above a 1.5-million-US-gallon (5,700 m3) pool of water, featuring water acts such as synchronized swimming as well as aerial and ground acts!  What a production! Second Row we literally had the water splashing on us! Being obsessed with the element it was #1 on my list and did not disappoint. I have seen a few Cirque performances and it was by far my favourite! We then headed to Beauty and Sussex for dinner at the Cosmo after that show! If you have the chance to go, be sure to get the bone marrow, the melt in your mouth dish was probably the most delicious thing I have even had the chance to eat! Given it is pricey but definitely worth it! The next day we headed out to the strip again to take a look at some of the amazing exhibits the hotels offer and of course see the legendary Welcome to Las Vegas sign!

On our last day in the city, we hopped in our car again and head out to Lake Mead! Touring the man made park was too cool! The weather was not on our side this day but we certainly made the best of it and got some great pics along the way. On our way back to our hotel to get ready to head home we stopped by the Outlet mall and got some great little buys! However be ready because there is a lot of people and you'll feel like you're in a giant can or sardines. Last but not least, we went to the casino at the Flamingo for some amateur to-scared-to-play-with-the-big-boys blackjack. I won my one round and that was it for me... lost $80 but I can finally say I played a hand and gambled! YAY ME!

Well all in all that's the short version of our trip! If you are thinking of heading out there feel free to send me an email and I would be more than happy to give you some more info, tips, and recommendations!

Until the next adventure... Cheers xo
